Ottoneu Tools: FGPoints
Below are two tools for Ottoneu FGPoints players to be used for the 2014 MLB season. The first tool is a roster building tool that will provide 2013 statistics, including platoon splits, for offensive players. Ottoneu players can use this tool to construct their team and prepare for 2014 auction drafts.
The second tool is a 2014 player projection tool that Ottoneu players (and commissioners) can use to estimate player projections for the 2014 season. The tool incorporates Steamer, Oliver, and 3 Year Average stats for each player and then allows you to enter your own projections for the 2014 season. Your own projections (will auto-populate FanGraph’s “Fans” projections as of 2.8.14…you can override these projections by entering your own) will load the team dashboard at the top of the tool and provide you with a summary of what you can expect from your Ottoneu team in 2014.

Wow, thanks for this. One question, how can I play around with it? Seems that permissions are “locked” or something? For example I can’t read the number in grid C1 because the column is too narrow, but the workbook won’t allow me to stretch the column, nor shrink the font size. But overall this is great and just what I needed to prepare me for our ottoneu draft in 8 days.
Very glad you can put it to use. I’ve made some minor adjustments that should allow you to see the cells, so download it again and try it out.
Can cell widths be changed? Having some trouble with values calculating being to large for the current cell width. Also, with the projection tool, does every roster spot need filled in before the summary at the top updates (Cells D2 to Q10). Also are rows 258-267 supposed to be manually updated? Or is there some form of grading system in place?
Try downloading the file again. I’ve made a few changes that should allow you to adjust cell formatting, size, etc. The dashboard at the top should populate regardless of how many players you have plugged into the lineup. Keep in mind the file is an .xlsx Excel format and some have had trouble viewing data if not using a current version of Excel
Rows 258+ are designed to be manually adjusted and are primarily for league commissioners if comparing teams, etc. In our league we do a pre-season “Power Ranking” with a snapshot description of every team just after the draft.
Is the D2 to Q10 portion populated as games are played? “#Name?” appears in D2 through D9. Columns E(2-9) through P(2-9) do not populate (if they are supposed to).
this is great. thank you!
brilliant tool, thank you! would love a Roto version too:)
This is great, thank you so much for sharing your work.
Appreciate it. More to come hopefully in the future…
This is awesome. I’m in Roto as well, but this is still useful. Actually, has anyone looked at how FG points correlates with Roto stats? Obviously some players are better in Points than in Roto; Points rewards pitchers for innings; Points doesn’t have batting average but does deduct points for making outs… so how closely do they correlate?
In short, yes – I think Chad Young took a look at the correlation and put the info in a post in this year’s (2014) FanGraphs+. Some of it does correlate pretty well, but there are also exceptions. In general, I think he found that hitters were a little more valuable in FGPoints and SABR than 4×4 or 5×5, but that starting pitchers were more valuable in 4×4 vs the other formats.
Here’s another tool if you want some Advanced Stats from the daily league standings page: http://bit.ly/1jAFdMR
